Atlanta Falcons Coach Gets Honest On Trading Desmond Ridder
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Falcons endured a disappointing 2023 season, prompting speculation about what could have been had former head coach Arthur Smith made different decisions regarding the quarterback position. The team pinned its hopes on second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder, but the outcome was far from ideal.

Ridder found himself thrust into a challenging role, which many argue he wasn’t ready for.

Smith’s handling of Ridder during the preseason, alternating between him and Taylor Heinicke despite vowing not to engage in such quarterback shuffling, only added to the team’s woes.

Following Smith’s departure and the appointment of Raheem Morris as head coach, the Falcons wasted no time in addressing their quarterback situation. They secured the services of Kirk Cousins in free agency and traded Ridder to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for wide receiver Rondale Moore.

Morris clarified to reporters during the NFL owners meeting that Ridder’s departure was not driven by a demand for a trade, but rather an opportunity to bolster the team’s receiving corps with added speed.

“Desmond was a great kid and he did not come to us and demand a trade or anything. He was in working out, doing the things he was supposed to do. The opportunity presented for us to add speed.”

The move to Arizona likely represents a fresh start for both Ridder and the Falcons. Ridder is anticipated to thrive in the Cardinals’ offensive scheme under the guidance of offensive coordinator Zac Robinson.

With the opportunity to learn behind Cardinals QB Kyler Murray, Ridder now has a chance to further develop his skills.

Reflecting on his time with the Falcons, Desmond Ridder posted a mixed record of 8 wins and 9 losses in his 17 starts. His statistics include 3,544 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, and a passer rating of 84.1.
